So, just yesterday I learn in Abnormal Psychology about Personality Disorder. Which makes me interested is about Conduct Disorder, Anti Social Disorder, and Psychopathy.
Conduct Disorder is a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior by a child in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated. So what do we see in here. It means that Conduct Disorder is when a child being more than 'naughty'.
The usual naughty is when we saw some child who throw garbage to someone else, hitting someone else, or maybe the meanest is only bully another kid. While some kid who have Conduct Disorder will do bullying, but to animals. They will torture the animals, they will try to manipulate things surround them. Here is some specific symptoms that you can see for the Conduct Disorder.
Specific Symptoms of Conduct Disorder
Conduct Disorder is characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated, as manifested by the presence of three (or more) of the following criteria in the past 12 months, with at least one criterion present in the past 6_months:
Aggression to people and animals
- often bullies, threatens, or intimidates others
- often initiates physical fights
- has used a weapon that can cause serious physical harm to others (e.g., a bat, brick, broken bottle, knife, gun)
- has been physically cruel to people
- has been physically cruel to animals
- has stolen while confronting a victim (e.g., mugging, purse snatching, extortion, armed robbery)
- has forced someone into sexual activity
Destruction of property
- has deliberately engaged in fire setting with the intention of causing serious damage
- has deliberately destroyed others’ property (other than by fire setting)
Deceitfulness or theft
- has broken into someone else’s house, building, or car
- often lies to obtain goods or favors or to avoid obligations (i.e., “cons” others)
- has stolen items of nontrivial value without confronting a victim (e.g., shoplifting, but without breaking and entering; forgery)
Serious violations of rules
- often stays out at night despite parental prohibitions, beginning before age 13 years
- has run away from home overnight at least twice while living in parental or parental surrogate home (or once without returning for a lengthy period)
- is often truant from school, beginning before age 13 years
Okay, so that was Conduct Disorder. After the Conduct Disorder, someone can become a Anti Social Disorder. But what is the difference between Conduct and Anti Social? While Conduct happened when you're still a little kid, Anti Social is the continuity of the Conduct Disorder, which is happened when you're a teenager.
When you're still in primary school, or maybe from 3 years old, and you do same like in the symptoms up there, you categorized as a Conduct Disorder. But when you're already in High School, you will be categorized as Anti Social Disorder. And, if you make it continue more and more until you're adult, you could become a psychopath.
Movies which represents a very good psychopath is none other than 'Silence of the Lamb', which is starred by Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist who is also a psychopath.
That is in the movie, but what about real life? Is there actually someone who is a psychopath like Dr. Hannibal? Well, the psychopath is around you. They concealed themselves with a really good personality. Often the psychopath is manipulative, very smart, and of course have a high IQ. It's almost the same as Conduct Disorder, but for psychopath, you can't help them to be like a normal society anymore. They don't feel it as a wrong doing, they feel like that is what they are.
So many cases in real life about those who are psychopath. They often read books, very receptive when learning something new and you could say that they're genius. But, they're lack of morality.
And psychopath doesn't have to be someone who do crimes, no, they can be like normal people, go to church, having wife, having a happy family, but deep down, they're manipulative, can blame others and make them feel bad. So those who have psychopathy really can manipulate people to believe them, which is a horrible thing if they do it for the wrong thing. Usually the leader of the terrorist do that for having so many people who will fight with him.
So, from conduct disorder (3-10 years old), and then Anti social Disorder (10-18), and after that Psychopath until the rest of his life. If you think it like this, it would be like a Pokemon Evolution, from Conduct, evolve into Anti Social, and then evolve into Psychopath.
The problem is, when someone already reach Psychopath, they can't be healed. But if someone still in Conduct disorder or Anti Social Disorder, they still can be helped.
Before we end our discussion, I want you to at least now something about a book of Torey Hayden. The book is titled, 'Sheila'. It is a great book. Well, the titled 'Sheila' probably only in Indonesia, but for in the American, you could search the book from Torey Hayden titled 'One Child'. It's the same.
